Take your first steps to enter one of the fastest growing industries in Australia. The Diploma of Children's Services from Sunshine Coast TAFE will prepare you to work with toddlers and young children.

For the Diploma in Children's Services (Early Childhood Education and Care) we recommend students:

  • Are physically, mentally and emotionally healthy to respond appropriately to children's needs.
  • Have a reasonable level of fitness to cope with standing, lifting, bending, twisting and reaching.
  • Can remain focused while children learn through play experiences and have the ability to anticipate difficulties or dangerous situations and intervene quickly.
  • Can meet the duty of care obligations, including supervision and assisting children with their self care needs.
  • Have the ability to interact and communicate in a calm and caring manner
  • Can interact effectively with family members and staff and have basic conflict resolution skills.
  • Enjoy working in a professional setting and are punctual, reliable, show initiative and can take direction.

Upon completion of the Diploma, you will become qualified to supervise other staff and volunteers. You'll be equipped with necessary skills to plan, implement and manage programs in early childhood services (0-5 years) in accordance with licensing, accreditation and duty of care requirements. Additional training is required to work across 0-12 years of age.

Staff in children's services must follow legislation and service policies. You must work to ensure the health and safety of the children in your care. You should have a positive non-judgmental approach to children and their families.

This course is delivered as blended delivery and includes compulsory industry placement per year.

If current Certificate III in Childrens Services is held, course duration is 12mths (2 semesters). Course for Certificate III holders starts in February, 2013.

Career Prospects :

Childcare Worker, Team Leader, Group Leader, Program Leader, Service Manager, Service Director, Special needs inclusion worker. Some jurisdictions require Advanced Diploma of Childrens Services.

 

Academic Entry Requirements :

Equivalent of Australian Year 12 (12 years of schooling) or selection according to eligibility and merit, vocational experience, previous study and personal competencies.

 

English Language Requirements :

If your first language is not English, you must satisfy one of the following English language proficiency requirements:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS), academic module - score of 5.5 with no individual score less than 5.0. NOTE: All applicants from AL3 and AL4 countries must sit an IELTS test
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - minimum score of 530 for the paper based test; 197 for the computer based; 71 for the internet based test
  • International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) - minimum individual score of three
  • Australian Year 12 English (or equivalent) - Sound Achievement rating
  • Cambridge First Certificate of English - A or B grades
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English
  • Successful completion of an acceptable formal course where the medium of instruction was English. This does not include English Language Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)
  • Swedish applicants - V, VG or MVG in English A and English B on your School Leaving Certificate
 

Additional Requirements :

Students are required to obtain & maintain Blue Card registration in order to participate in this course. Further information can be obtained from www.bluecard.qld.gov.au. Blue Cards are required by all workers and voulnteers involved in the care / supervision of children.

Students need to be physically, mentally and emotionally healthy to respond appropriately to children's needs. A reasonable level of fitness and stamina is required to cope with standing, lifting, bending, twisting and reaching.

Child Care workers are required to interact in a calm and caring manner. Intending students should possess a high level of interpersonal communication skills, the ability to use appropriate language toward children and also to interact with family members and staff. The ability to use basic conflict resolution skills will also be advantageous.

A positive, non judgemental approach to children and their families is essential.

Further Study :

The Diploma can lead to further study in teaching and education at University, with credit transfer arrangements varying at different Universities. The Diploma also leads to the Advanced Diploma in Children's Services.
