Do you stare into space thinking about white space? Do you look at the world a little differently? If you've got the vision, Sunshine Coast TAFE can provide you with the skills necessary to progress in your graphic design career.

Our Diploma of Graphic Design has been developed in liaison with both the graphic design and print publishing industries, and includes the skill requirements nominated by industry leaders. The course will allow you to develop skills and knowledge across a broad base of diverse yet interrelated areas such as design, pre-press, web development, multimedia, photography, production, interpretation of briefs, marketing and project management.

We'll provide interesting and informative learning experiences in:

computer design; computer graphics; web design; multimedia creation; drawing; technical and commercial illustration; typography; reproduction processes and layout design, with an emphasis on a simulated studio bureau based environment. You'll also learn essential photography skills by taking part in practical studio projects, using a variety of photographic equipment and image production equipment and you'll also learn lighting techniques. The course includes direct industry contact through specialists and industry visits.

Information :

Course timetable is 3 days per week.

This course consists of four semesters of study with subjects offered sequentially in accordance with appropriate knowledge and skill levels. In the first year your focus will be primarily on preparation of creative work, hand rendered and computer generated, suitable for a variety of print outputs. In the second year, you will focus on the skills needed to develop professional level websites, including domain name registration, hosting, design, uploading and maintenance. During the final semester the course replicates the design studio environment and you will work on a variety of projects.

It would be an advantage to have some prior basic computer experience. Computer graphic applications taught in depth include - Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Flash and Adobe Dreamweaver. Photography units of study are also built into the course leading to the dual qualification upon graduation.

 

Career Prospects :

The graphic design industry offers a range of employment opportunities in the areas of graphic design, web design, printing, multimedia, illustration, photography, television and the film industries. Graduates of the course will be well prepared to enter any area of the graphic design industry with industry-level competency. 

Academic Entry Requirements :

You must have successfully completed Year 12 or be a mature aged entrant. If you have special needs and would like to apply for this course you are encouraged to contact the Disability Services officer based at Sunshine Coast TAFE and discuss any special requirements you may have.

English Language Requirements :

If your first language is not English, you must satisfy one of the following English language proficiency requirements:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS), academic module - score out of 5.5 with no individual score less than 5.0. NOTE: All applicants from AL3 and AL4 countries must sit and IELTS test. http://www.immi.gov.au/students/student-visa-assessment-levels.htm
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - minimum score of 530 for the paper based test; 197 for the computer based; 71 for the internet based test.
  • International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) - minimum individual score of three.
  • Australian Year 12 English (or equivalent) - Sound Achievement rating.
  • Cambridge First Certificate of English - A or B grades.
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English
  • Successful completion of an acceptable formal course where the medium of instruction was English. This does not included English Language Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS).
  • Swedish applicants - V, VG or MVG in English A and English B on your School Leaving Certificate.
 

Additional Requirements :

Students are required to purchase a Graphic Design Kit valued at approximately $250. Kits are paid for and issued on the first day of the course. This cost is not included in course fees.

Further Study :

Upon completion of the Diploma of Graphic Design, graduates may branch into other areas for specialist study, including a Diploma of Multimedia Digital Art & Design & a Diploma of Visual Arts (Fine Arts). Credit may be given if further related University study is undertaken.
