Has a career in photography caught your eye? This course introduces students to black and white photography and basic digital applications before shifting focus to advanced digital imaging techniques. The emphasis throughout the course is on practical commercial projects, ensuring that assignment work is relevant to the requirements of the photographic industry.

Students prepare two major photographic folios over the one year period. Other major activities include studio and location photography shoots and preparation for and participation in an end-of-year group photographic exhibition.

Multi-skilling in programs like web design and desktop publishing are an integral part of this program.

Students also have the opportunity to visit galleries and photographic laboratories, submit entries to award-based professional competitions and attend workshops presented by industry representatives in relation to darkroom, studio and digital applications.

Information :

The Certificate IV in Photoimaging is a fully accredited one year full-time program of study. On completion of this course you will have the opportunity to further your studies in the Diploma of Photoimaging should you wish, subject to places being available.

The course commences with basic digital applications. You will take photographs both on location and in the studio, and then move onto commercial projects in the studio and location with a digital imaging emphasis. The year culminates in a group exhibition. The emphasis throughout this course is that assignment work is relevant to the photographic industry.

Some of the activities you will be involved in will include - excursions to galleries and photographic laboratories, studio and location photography shots, preparing for and participating in a photographic exhibition, participating in award based professional competitions, attending workshops presented by industry representatives in relation to darkroom, studio and digital applications, all assignments are photographic projects, you will prepare two major photographic folios over the one year period.

 

Career Prospects :

Career opportunities include - general photographer, commercial photographer, professional photographic assistant, image enhancer / retoucher, digital photographic post production. As a graduate from this course you will possess the necessary skills, knowledge and attitude to enter the photographic industry as a qualified employee. 

Academic Entry Requirements :

Equivalent of Australian Year 12 or selection according to eligibility and merit, vocational experience, previous study and personal competencies.

A folio is required for admission to this course. Please contact the International Student Office. 

English Language Requirements :

If you first language is not English, you must satisfy one of the following English language proficiency requirements:

  • International English Language System (IELTS), academic module - score out of 5.5 with no individual score less than 5.0. NOTE: All applicants from AL3 and AL4 countries must sit an IELTS test. http://www.immi.gov.au/students/student-visa-assessment-levels.htm
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - minimum score of 530 for the paper based test; 197 for the computer based; 71 for the internet based test.
  • Australian Year 12 English (or equivalent) - Sound Achievement rating.
  • Cambridge First Certificate of English - A or B grades.
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English.
  • Successful completion of an acceptable formal course where the medium of instruction was English. This does not include English Language Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS).
  • Swedish applicants - V, VG or MVG in English A and English B on your School Leaving Certificate.
 

Additional Requirements :

The course can be costly for students who don't already have some basic items. All students need a camera, basic digital or digital SLR is the most useful. Any specialist lenses will also be an advantage.

Generally, the cost for additional equipment is approximately $4,000, but students can minimise these costs by bringing some items with them. Purchase of these items will equip students with most of their needs for a career in photography.

Other suggested items to bring:
Laptop computer with Adobe Photoshop loaded (enrolled students are eligible to purchase Photoshop at a reduced price)
Light weight tripod
Dedicated flash for your camera
2 Flash cards and a flash card reader
Photography bag

In addition to equipments costs there will be other expenses associated with the program. You should allow approximately $250 extra per semester, for expenses such as photographic paper and prints, folio presentations and other miscellaneous items. These items wil be essential in presenting your work in a professional manner consistent with current industry standards.
