The fashion industry is an exciting, challenging and rewarding environment to work in and opportunities lie in the fashion industry in a variety of different areas. In our Certificate IV in Applied Fashion Design and Technology we teach you not just how to design and create your fashion designs, but also the skills and abilities to work within many areas of the fashion industry. In this program the Sunshine Coast TAFE offers activities in design, sewing, pattern making, made to measure, garment design and production and pattern making.

The course will encompass a wide range of practical experience and theoretical lessons with guidance from industry professionals. For practical, real world experience, students can showcase their work at a variety of organised fashion events and are also encouraged to submit entries to local and national fashion awards.

This qualification provides students with skills and knowledge in the fashion industry including design application; production methods; fabric identification and performance; communication and workplace practices. Areas covered can include OHS and quality assurance; preliminary design and application; computer skills and trade sketching; pattern making; grading and sewing; and fashion industry practices.

Information :

This is a practical course which develops the technical skills required for employment within the Fashion/Clothing Production Industry.

Study areas include textiles theory, garment construction, design fundamentals, product design, spec drawing, trend forecasting, textile printing & design, pattern making & grading, computer skills,trade sketching and quality assurance.

The course is one year, two semesters full time, with attendance normally required 4 to 5 days per week. Flexible Delivery options are available at the Mooloolaba campus.

 

Career Prospects :

Graduates are qualified to find employment as a sample machinist, assistant patternmaker or assistant designer. 

Academic Entry Requirements :

You must have successfully completed year 10 (or equivalent), turned 16 or have relevant experience and/or qualifications that indicate likely success in completing the course.

 

English Language Requirements :

If your first language is not English, you must satisfy one of the following English language proficiency requirements:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS), academic module - score of 5.5 with no individual score less than 5.0. NOTE: All applicants from AL3 and AL4 countries must sit an IELTS test
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - minimum score of 530 for the paper based test; 197 for the computer based; 71 for the internet based test
  • International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) - minimum individual score of three
  • Australian Year 12 English (or equivalent) - Sound Achievement rating
  • Cambridge First Certificate of English - A or B grades
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English
  • Successful completion of an acceptable formal course where the medium of instruction was English. This does not include English Language Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)
  • Swedish applicants - V, VG or MVG in English A and English B on your School Leaving Certificate
 

Additional Requirements :

Students are provided with a sewing kit at commencement of the program. The cost of the kit is included in the tuition fees. Calico is also supplied at no extra cost. Students are required to purchase their own fabrics for final garments and also a few commercial patterns.

Further Study :

Upon successful completion of the Certificate IV in Fashion Design & Technology, students can continue their studies at Diploma level by applying to undertake the Diploma of Applied Fashion Design & Technology (LMT50307), which can be completed with one further year of study. On completion of the Diploma there is also the opportunity of studying for the Advanced Diploma. The Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Technology course are also offered at Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE.
