Certificate III in Fitness (SIS30310)

Help make other people's New Year's Resolutions come true. Enrol in a Certificate III in Fitness at Sunshine Coast TAFE and you'll kick-start your fitness career. This Certificate is an entry-level qualification to enter the fitness industry, which provides knowledge and skills necessary to operate as a fitness instructor.

Throughout the program you'll learn generic work skills and essential fitness specific technical and instructional knowledge. Areas of study include client screening and fitness assessment; anatomy and physiology; basic exercise programming; basic exercise science; maintenance of fitness equipment; nutrition; teamwork; communication; risk analysis; and first aid. The course also includes vocational placement.

This six-month full time course is for individuals interested in working as a fitness instructor. You can specialise as a gym instructor, group fitness or aqua instructor.

Information :

Semester 2 course commences 9.00am 9th July, 2012. There will be no orientation for this course.

Course timetable is 5 full days per week 9.00am - 5.00pm. This program requires a significant commitment from participants.

Students MUST enrol into 2 of 3 electives on offer.

You will learn to develop basic fitness programs, apply exercise science, use and maintain fitness equipment, first aid, plan and conduct sessions for clients, risk analysis of activities and you will also have opportunity to work in our fully equipped gym.

 

Career Prospects :

This course will give you opportunity to lead classes and individuals in basic exercise routines, resistance training, group exercise and water based fitness group exercises, depending on your area of specialisation. 

Academic Entry Requirements :

You must have successfully completed year 10 (or equivalent), turned 16 or have relevant experience and/or qualifications.

 

English Language Requirements :

TAFE Queensland requires proficiency in the English language before you can begin formal studies. This is determined by one of the following prerequisites:-

  • International English Language Testing System IELTS, academic module score of 6.0 with no individual score less than 5.5;
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL - score of 550 PBT or 230 CBT;
  • Successful completion of an acceptable formal course where the medium of instruction was English. This does not include ELICOS
  • Completion of Stage 3 minimum Direct English Entry Program - University of the Sunshine Coast
  • Swedish students - V, VG or MVG in English A & English B on your School Leaving Certificate

Students are required to choose 2 electives out of 3 possible electives. This choice needs to be made at the time of enrolment. Please ensure only 2 of the 3 boxes are ticked when enrolling. See info below for more information on each unit.

SISCCRD301A Facilitate community development through recreational activities

This boxing for fitness course is designed for personal trainers (PT's) to gain the necessary qualification to be able incorporate boxing training into their clients training sessions. The focus of the course is train qualified PT's or those who are currently studying to be a PT in the fundamentals of boxing for fitness.
The course includes: Punching techniques, Safety, Pad Holding, Combinations, Incorporating boxing into personal training sessions, Boxing in groups

By participating in this course you will receive a pair of boxing gloves and hand wraps

SISFFIT309A Plan and deliver group exercise sessions
The Group Exercise competency is designed to give Fitness Instructors and students completing a Certificate III in Fitness the knowledge to design and deliver a variety of group exercise classes in fitness centres or a community environment.

Types of classes include: Circuit training, Hilo classes, Bodysculpt classes, Step classes, Group Boxing (if the Boxing for Fitness course is also completed)

On successful completion of the Certificate III in Fitness and the Group Exercise competency students will be able to register with fitness industry peak bodies with a specialisation in Group Exercise Freestyle.

SISFFIT310A Plan and deliver water based fitness activities

This competency will give students the knowledge to design and deliver group fitness classes in water. There are a variety of class types including; shallow, deep, composite, special requirements, circuit/athletes and freestyle.
On completion of Certificate III the student will be able to register with the Australian peak bodies as an aqua instructor.

Additional Information

Further Study :

Successful completion of Certificate III can lead to further studies in Certificate IV in Fitness, Diploma of Sport and Recreation and Diploma of Fitness. These courses are offered at Sunshine Coast TAFE.
