If you'd like a career in the great outdoors, we've got great news! You can complete a Certificate II in Horticulture at Sunshine Coast TAFE in just six months. This entry level, practical course will introduce you to the horticulture industry and provide you with necessary skills and knowledge to perform basic industry practices and procedures.

You'll study a range of topics including nursery, gardening, landscaping, arboriculture and live works. We'll also teach you how to operate machinery and equipment and show you how to follow OHS procedures.

This qualification focuses on the general skills needed by horticulturalists. The program will cover tasks such as: recognising different plants; propagating, planting and caring for plants; operating horticultural machinery and equipment; treating weeds, pests and diseases; maintaining irrigation and drainage systems; helping with landscape construction; and generally working effectively in the industry.

Orientation is Wednesday 11th July, 9am-12pm. Room H1 Nambour Campus.

Course timetable Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 8.30am - 4.00pm

Students MUST wear enclosed footwear for the duration of the course.

 

Career Prospects :

This qualification has national relevance regardless of region and caters for the varying nature of horticultural requirements in large and small enterprises. It enables entry into a broad range of horticultural industries at the level of horticultural worker. Some career options include: Nursery Hand, Gardener, Landscape Worker, Groundsperson, Parks Maintenance. 

Academic Entry Requirements :

You must have successfully completed year 10 (or equivalent), turned 16 or have relevant experience and/or qualifications that indicate likely success in completing the course.

 

English Language Requirements :

If your first language is not English, you must satisfy one of the following English language proficiency requirements:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS), academic module - score of 5.5 with no individual score less than 5.0. NOTE: All applicants from AL3 and AL4 countries must sit an IELTS test
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - minimum score of 530 for the paper based test; 197 for the computer based; 71 for the internet based test
  • International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) - minimum individual score of three
  • Australian Year 12 English (or equivalent) - Sound Achievement rating
  • Cambridge First Certificate of English - A or B grades
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English
  • Successful completion of an acceptable formal course where the medium of instruction was English. This does not include English Language Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)
  • Swedish applicants - V, VG or MVG in English A and English B on your School Leaving Certificate
 

Additional Requirements :

Students will be required to supply their own safety clothing including steel capped boots, gloves, a broad brimmed hat & a collared shirt, secateurs and stationery. These items are not included in the course fees.

Students will not be permitted into classes unless they comply with the minimum dress standard.

All jewellery & watches should be removed during practical work.

Students will be required to wear steel capped boots with non-slip soles for the working environment. Students should wear clothing manufactured from a fire resistant material such as 100% cotton drill as you may come in to contact with fire, heat and molten metal.
Students should provide their own gloves, a broad brimmed hat and a collared shirt.
Sunscreen will be provided for exposed skin in outdoor activities.

It will not be necessary to purchase textbooks as you will receive printed class handouts and have access to the Internet.
