Diploma of Fitness (SRF50206)

(Domestic Students)

If you’d like to help people get back on their feet, race into Sunshine Coast TAFE and enrol in the Diploma of Fitness.This Diploma is designed for those looking to gain employment in the fitness industry at a level incorporating rehabilitation and specific populations.


The first year of the program involves study at Certificate III and Certificate IV level, which will allow you to apply for work in the fitness industry as a fitness Instructor, group exercise instructor, aqua instructor or personal trainer. The second year of study incorporates exercise for specific at risk populations, including those in need of muscular skeletal rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation and neurological rehabilitation. It involves working with people with other chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes.

Throughout the course, you’ll learn about advanced anatomy and physiology, corrective exercise, prevention and management of exercise related injuries, body composition management and nutrition for specific
requirements.

If you already have your Certificate IV in Fitness or a related Diploma program such as Sport and Recreation, you can now upgrade to your Diploma of Fitness at Sunshine Coast TAFE.

So you can make the most of your education, Sunshine Coast TAFE Mooloolaba features first class facilities including a commercial standard fitness centre and group exercise room, a large range of fitness testing equipment and easy access to pools and running tracks. You’ll also have direct access to some of the most beautiful beaches in Australia.


This course is for people who aspire to plan, deliver and monitor the progress of exercise programs for moderate risk clients, in conjunction with suitably qualified allied health and/or medical professionals. The fitness industry has an extra level of registration - Fitness Specialist - which will qualify you to work alongside Allied Health Professionals such as - physiotherapists and occupational therapists as well as hospital and clinic settings.


The program and delivery of this course was voted by Fitness Queensland to be the best in Queensland in 2004. Graduates have found employment in Fitness Centres, running Water based fitness programs in pools, working as Personal Trainers self-employed, in fitness centres and working on cruise ships and at its highest level, working in Rehabilitation.


This qualification is recognised throughout Australia alongside Allied Health Professionals in New Zealand, Canada and the UK and Northern Europe.

Information :

This program requires a significant commitment from you as a student.
You will be studying -
1st Year Semester one: Exercise Science, group exercising, aquatic, strength and condition, client relations, communication, client programming
1st Year Semester two: Exercise Science, personal training, advanced strength and conditioning, postural screening, advanced client programming, nutrition, working with at risk populations
2nd Year Semester three: At risk populations including those with obesity, disability, and those in need of rehabilitation and nutrition intervention.
2nd Year Semester four: Managing elite performance, continuing to work with at-risk clients andndash; cardio respiratory, neurological, children, older adults, pregnancy, postural problems, expanding participation in leisure and recreation.

Industry may require you to be over 18 years of age on completion of the course, to be registered with Fitness Australia or Kinect and employed within the industry.

Career Prospects :

This course may give you an opportunity for employment as a Personal Trainer, Fitness Centre Instructor and as a Fitness Specialist working with Allied Health Professionals. 

Entry Requirement :

Completion of Year 12 or its equivalent, or mature age entry is essential for vocational outcomes in this course.
(Discussion with course coordinator is mandatory for those under 17 years of age)

A Doctors Certificate is required to indicate the student can safely take part in exercise of a moderate intensity and the certificate is to be brought to orientation. 

Assessment Information :

Assessment is undertaken throughout the course both in practical and theory exercises. Assessment is competency based and requires the completion of all projects and assignments, written and/or practical, as set out within the Unit Study Guides and Workbooks. Written, verbal and practical assessments make up the majority of assessments, but attendance, general attitude and your application to your studies are also taken into account.

This boxing for fitness course is designed for personal trainers (PT's) to gain the necessary qualification to be able incorporate boxing training into their clients training sessions. The focus of the course is train qualified PT's or those who are currently studying to be a PT in the fundamentals of boxing for fitness.
The course includes: Punching techniques, Safety, Pad Holding, Combinations, Incorporating boxing into personal training sessions, Boxing in groups

SISFFIT309A Plan and deliver group exercise sessions
The Group Exercise competency is designed to give Fitness Instructors and students completing a Certificate III in Fitness the knowledge to design and deliver a variety of group exercise classes in fitness centres or a community environment.

Types of classes include: Circuit training, Hilo classes, Bodysculpt classes, Step classes, Group Boxing (if the Boxing for Fitness course is also completed)

On successful completion of the Certificate III in Fitness and the Group Exercise competency students will be able to register with fitness industry peak bodies with a specialisation in Group Exercise Freestyle.

This competency will give students the knowledge to design and deliver group fitness classes in water. There are a variety of class types including; shallow, deep, composite, special requirements, circuit/athletes and freestyle.
