Certificate II in Transport and Distribution (Coastal Maritime Operations-Coxswain) (TDM20307)

Move your transport career forward by completing a Certificate II in Transport and Distribution (Coastal Maritime Operations-Coxswain) at Sunshine Coast TAFE. This program is Restricted and will provide you with an employment pathway into the commercial maritime industry.

In this short three and a half week course you’ll learn how to: monitor condition and seaworthiness of a small vessel up to 24 meters; apply seamanship skills and techniques when operating a small vessel within the limits of Coxswain; manoeuvre a domestic vessel within the limits of responsibility of a Coxswain; operate and carry out basic service checks on small vessel marine propulsion systems; carry out refuelling and fuel transfer operations; transmit and receive information by marine radio or telephone; and plan and navigate a short voyage within inshore limits.

Apply First Aid is also undertaken within this training program; for those participants who hold a current First Aid Certificate they will not be required to undertake this unit of competency. The trainer and assessor will need to see a certified copy of the First Aid Certificate including a current CPR.

Students will be allowed 10 weeks to complete assignments.

Students are required to supply a passport photo for the marine radio course.

Students are required to purchase 'Small Ships Manual' -MSQ latest edition, prior to the course.

Upon successful completion of this training program participants will receive a Result of Assessment only.
All students will receive a task book that will give a 50% reduction on seatime, students will also need to complete a practical holistic assessment at the students expense.

Successful participants completing this training program may be eligible to apply to Marine Safety Queensland (MSQ) for regulatory provision for operation of marine equipment in Queensland such as a
Coxswains Licence.

Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE recommends that participants contact MSQ at www.msq.qld.gov.au for further detailed information regarding the requirements of issue for a Queensland Coxswain's Licence.

Entry Requirement :

All candidates must attend an interview to establish a training plan. Enrolled Students will be contacted 2-3 weeks prior to the commencement of the course to arrange an interview time.

The following units from the Elements of Shipboard Safety course are not a pre- requisite, however must be completed to obtain a Certificate II Transport and Distribution (Coastal Maritime Operations-Coxswain).

TDM MF5407A Observe safety and emergency procedures on a coastal vessel
TDM MF5507B Fight and extinguish fires on board a coastal vessel.
